Roots and Resilience: Art for Change is a dynamic group exhibition that foregrounds the contributions of African American artists as vital agents of cultural preservation, resistance, and transformation.

Roots and Resilience: Art for Change is a dynamic group exhibition that foregrounds the contributions of African American artists as vital agents of cultural preservation, resistance, and transformation.

My team, consiting of me as the Creative Director with Zeta Bengoechea, Olga Nerciu and Ray DeLeon was responsible for turning the essence of the exhibition into a visual language that could be translated into the branding of the exhibition. The exhibition’s theme was both fascinating and profoundly serious. It pushed me to approach my role with deep responsibility, diving into extensive research on the history of the movement, the struggles and successes of the communities, the visual language, the storytelling aspects, and many other details that made the exhibition what it is now.

Some literature that helped me learn more about the topic were The Art of Romare Bearden (The Prevalence of Ritual) as well as an amazing article by Patricia Hills titled Cultural Legacies and the Transformation of the Cubist Collage Aesthetic by Romare Bearden, Jacob Lawrence, and Other African-American Artists, discussing the historic importance that shape language had for the movement, something we tried to incorporate in our designs.

I am very grateful to Tim Jaeger for allowing me to work on this project, as well as to other members of the exhibition team who created Roots and Resilience. I also wanted to thank Ringling College of Art and Design's Business of Art and Design Department for all their help throughout the project.
